England and Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a pool together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
